Uvuloplasty - Snoring Treatment
1. The soft palate is shortened, so its free edge narrows the airway less;
2. Incision sites make the palate more dense, so soft tissues vibrate less when exposed to air.
Thus, the desired goal is being achieved - soft palate vibration (snoring) disappears since there are no obstacles for the passage of air and vibration of the tissues, which causes snoring. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in hospital settings. It lasts about an hour. After the surgery, it is necessary to be supervised by the medical staff at least 24 hours. Full recovery takes approximately 7-10 days.
Laser Uvulopalatoplasty involves the conduction of similar manipulations, but instead of a scalpel, a laser is used. It not only removes excess tissue, but also solders the wound. Due to this, blood loss is reduced; the time of the surgery reduces; the postoperative period is less painful; there is less risk of inflammation in the areas of surgical incisions.
The main advantages of this method are: the absence of burns and wound edge necrosis; minimal blood loss since the vessels are soldered instantly; less risk of coarse scars.
If episodes of APNEA happen frequently (respiratory arrest in a dream), Laser Uvulopalatoplasty can be used as one of the stages of complex treatment with the use of CIPAP-therapy (creating a high air pressure on the inspiration with the help of a special machine).
Postoperative period at home and recommendations
You must strictly follow the doctor's recommendations, since the greatest number of complications occurs at home. The necessary medication is usually prescribed individually for everyone at discharge. The most dangerous after tonsillectomy are 2-3 and 9-11 days. For 14 days after the operation, you must categorically exclude the physical activity, overheating, baths, and hot food.
You can: take a warm shower, go for a walk, and breathe air;
You cannot: Take a bath, do sports during 1 month after the surgery, eat and drink hot.
